2021 Blog 8 - July Croatia

Man the summer is cruising by so fast, it’s hard to imagine that it’s the middle of July already. Normally we would be in Croatia doing our summer MLO-Mission Learning Opportunity, but since Covid has put several things on hold and put other things up in the air, we are stateside and working diligently on collecting and shipping equipment. We are now up to helping 37 countries and seems like requests come in weekly. We are also extremely busy trying to get HiS PLACE put together to do local ministry. More on that in the next blog and we will have some neat details to tell you, but not for this go around.  Today I want to share with you an update I received from Stefan and Arie in Croatia. They have been such a blessing and hard working at helping those who have been affected by the earthquake, hosting visiting construction teams from across Croatia and Germany and still finding time to coach baseball and host camps in our absence. What a blessing. Sit back and enjoy the pictures as Stefan tells you how God is working through the game of baseball across Croatia.

From Stefan:

This is the third year of camp in Gracac that we have been invited to help in cooperation with IST ministry group (Intentional Strategies for Transformation.) This camp is in the beginning stages and the growth that many have witnessed is humbling: kids falling in love with the game, friendship with parents, friendships in the city, doors opening up, friendship with other ministries groups, etc.

The city of Gracac is located in the mountains area of Croatia called Lika:
Just to give you some context from how I understand it. Gracac is a small town that endured a lot during the civil war, 1991-96. This town is sort of out of sight, out of mind for many, it is a place that many pass on their trip to the coast. There are many small villages and smaller towns in this region that are struggling socioeconomically. Baseball in this region is foreign as it can get. The nature is stunning. This region has mountains, lakes, rivers, caves, pastures, woods, untouched forests, etc. The inland Lika region has Croatia highest concentration of national and natural parks. The most iconic being Plitvice Lakes and is only about 8 miles from the sea.
The field where we play is located in the yard of a house that is not yet ready to move in; however, one of the Croatian family of 5 children purchased it and they are planning to move and serve as missionaries in Gracac. Camp is organized by IST group and another Croatian family that is serving in Gracac as full time missionaries. This family has established contacts with families, school, and they have been always preparing the way for families of Gracac and surrounding areas to hear about this camp.  There is a wonderful story how baseball idea happened, and how IST group and local missionaries came together to decide to organize a first baseball camp three years ago. I won’t be able to go in details of the story, but I can tell you that prayers were answered for God to move in this region and hearts of the people.

The Lika Region is a very challenging area for evangelism, as war devastated not just infrastructure of area, but many relationships, and outreach efforts has not been many. We are all seeing the change as town is embracing this idea of baseball, and this year we had the first tournament on a local soccer field with 2 teams that are established clubs in Croatia. There was a team from the city of Zadar (about an hour from Gracac) and Sisak Storks that came to be part of the tournament. Both teams came with a kids team and adult team. Adults played co-Ed softball. Many parents showed up for the first time to watch their kids play baseball. At the camp we had 4 days of practice and the last day we had the tournament. About 100 people gathered for the tournament.

One of the parents of a little girl that has been coming to camp since we started three years ago, are struggling financially, but they still brought watermelons to the tournament to share with everyone. They have been blessed by seeing how happy their daughter is. Three years ago this little girl didn’t want to speak to us, she was extremely shy, but this year a complete transformation. She was coaching other kids, her voice was definitely heard as she was telling others what they need to do in the game. Just amazing.

One of the biggest highlight for Arie and me was this story that the missionary who bought the property where we hold the camp shared. He told us that one afternoon, closer to sunset, he was going by the house to pick up something and as he pulled in the yard, he saw three kids playing baseball. At first, they were little scared because they had a baseball, and they explained to him that they didn’t took it, but found it in the bushes. Of course, he didn’t mind. Instead of a bat, they were using a wood stick. They fell in love with the game of baseball. This reminds me when we had first had baseball camps in Sisak, and we as kids would do the same, play sandlot type baseball in the neighborhood. And let’s not miss the message here for all of us, God provides. No matter what “thorns and bushes” in this life may discourage us, nothing good can come from them, God desires mercy. As we follow Him with unburden heart and complete trust, depending in His providence, and compassion for us. God provided that baseball to be in a bush for this kids. These kids are now “fishermen” for others.

Many parents came to meet us and expressed their gratitude for this fellowship we’re having with their children. There are many stories that I could write about what happened during all these camps, but it would be even a longer than already is.

Many people asked why. Why baseball? Why Gracac? From parents to grocery store workers, to restaurant owners, to construction worker, etc. Let’s continue to love first. Love them where they are and till they ask why. Jesus did it! Amen!

Please pray for:
  • We are looking into how to help a local missionary start a baseball club in Gracac and continue to be a support for him.  Zadar team and Sisak team decided to help as well in this endeavor.
  • IST group director Zuzanna as her husband Jerry is going through ALS.
  • Blanka  and Vanko and their 5 children as they are planning to move to Gracac and minister there.
  • Sandra and Roni and their 2 children as they are serving in Gracac as local missionaries.
Thank you for your support. Together we can.
Sharing a thought that encouraged me and I hope it will encourage you as well because it shows how we as Christians are invited to love as Christ loved us first and be responsible to share God’s love, “we must not forget that love for a human being must also contain certain elements of struggle. Struggle for the beloved human being, and his or her true good.”  God’s word reminds us of that, "As they were marching out, they came upon a man of Cyrene, Simon by name; this man they compelled to carry his cross.” –Matthew 27:32

Simon the Cyrene reminds us that love is heavy. Sometimes the weight feels unbearable when we cannot take away the suffering of a dear friend or when we can’t stop doubting whether we made the right call in a tough situation. And this is where the struggle really kicks in— this toil for the good of the other will leave scars on our hearts and on our bodies.

Christ chose a very ordinary, imperfect man to walk with Him beneath the Cross—and we can be sure that when He calls us to do the same, He is there to make up for what we lack. Whose Simon is He calling you to be today? If you are willing to be splintered by the burden of love, you can trust that He will make it redemptive.

God’s peace,
Stefan

God is busy and we are blessed beyond measure even when we can’t be there. But we sure are ready to return! God bless and remember Jesus loves you and so do I!

HE DID IT!
